Research Proposal

The increase in technology has brought this decade to places that people would have never thought possible but it does not come without negative effects.  I am doing my research paper on how technology has changed social skills.  This is the first time in history where the older generation can learn from the younger generation who is more proficient in technology like cell phones, texting, and the internet.  People interact with each other less face to face and more through the internet or cell phones.  The fact that the person you are conversing with cannot hear your tone or see your body language significantly detracts from the quality of the communication.  The technology acts as a safety blanket increasing confidence and decreasing discretion but because of this people have lost valuable personal skills and public speaking abilities.  Thesis: Today’s technology is significantly decreasing social skills of young adults.
To research this topic I will look for articles and journals about technology and things such as public speaking abilities and the psychology of social skills.  Also, articles about how tone and body language play a part in communication would be helpful.  I have found an article from the Oxford Journals at about how texting is causing literacy problems that includes a study to test teens on their texting and literary skills.  It also talks about how the use of texting has increased a lot over the past couple years.  I found another article about how the internet causes or is a product of loneliness which is relevant to the social skills of people using the internet and such.  The other sources I found were about social consequences of the internet on adolescents, social skills being affected by the internet, and online relationships and how technology affects relationships.  I would like to research more to find specific articles about cell phones and technology.
I speculate that I will run across problems in distinguishing credible sources from those that are not as credible like opinion articles and such.  The topic of technology and social skills is relevant today so there are probably various opinion articles about texting and video gaming that would not be good to use as sources.  Also, I might have some trouble finding sources in general.  To avoid these problems I will try to examine the authors and organizations that I come across, and use better search engines like Google scholar and OneSearch on the Clemson website for internet sources.  I also might have trouble organizing my paper because of the many different subtopics that technology can bring about.  To resolve this I will try to narrow my focus as much as possible and use organizational devices such as charts or diagrams to outline paragraphs.

Sources for Research Paper

http://wsr.oxfordjournals.org/content/2/1/53.full#results
This source is all about texting and how it has influenced the English skills and social skills of young people.  It has a lot of statistics about texting and it also includes a study held to discover the effects that texting had on reading and writing skills.  It also talks about how texting has spread throughout the world in such a short period of time.

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0747563203000402
This source is all about how the internet effects people socially and how it causes loneliness. It talks about how the internet started with lonely people and how it encourages isolation instead of building social relationships.

http://cdp.sagepub.com/content/18/1/1.short
This source talks about social consequences of the internet on adolescents.  This would be a good source because it shows how being online is effecting the youth of this generation.

http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/cpb.2005.8.1
This sources is about social skills and how the internet has effected social skills of young adults. It also talks about how the negative effects are increased if the internet is misused.

http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/109493102321018196
This article is about people who form relationships online and how this effects the relationships. It also mentions social skills and how one's friendships are effected by meeting online or even just using the internet to connect.

Possible Research Topics

How technology has effected social skills

This would be a really interesting topic because it pertains to my generation (and any generation).  I think technology has significantly decreased social skills.  Some people think that with technology, comes loss of some things and a gain of others.  For example, people sometimes connect and meet through online gaming or through internet dating cites that allow people to open up and be themselves but I think this is still a completely negative affect of technology.  People have decreased in their ability to effectively communicate face to face with individuals or a large group of people.  Nowadays we need public speaking courses and "mixers" to be forced to meet people and "ice breakers" so that we know what to say when we are first meeting someone.  Attention spans have decreased as well which influences our ability to carry on a long intellectual conversation.  With texting, we aren't even making full sentences (grammar has decreased) and people stick to like 3 word answers. Anyway I think this would be a good topic to do, I'm just worried that it's not very original.

The Ethics of cloning animals

My argument would be that this is not right because it might lead to testing and cloning humans which is unacceptable. This is an interesting topic and with all of the advances lately is it pertains to today's world.

Visual Rhetoric Assignment Image and Thesis

Thesis:
The figure effectively portrays the idea of Batman's notorious vigilante nature while advertising the movie "The Dark Knight" using rhetorical devices such as the ethos of the familiar Batman symbol, pathos in the emotional reaction invoked through the dramatic visual images on the poster, logos in the logical appeal of good conquering evil, and kairos.
